Relationship between internet addiction with neuroticism in high school students, Kashan, Iran

Abstract:

Introduction: for most people, concept and definition of internet addiction is not known and use the word addiction for medication misuse or alcohol. Internet addiction is a physiologic-mental disorder which includes intolerance, severance symptoms, academic deuce, and disorder in social relationships. Some personal characteristics (neuroticism) have important effects on using internet. The objective of the present study was to investigate relationship between neuroticism and academic achievement with internet addiction. Methods: This research was a descriptive study and included 400 high school students, who were selected by random cluster sampling. Information was gathered using a 20 items addiction questionnaire and personality characteristics was measured using NEO 60 items personality inventory. Also, the mean scores of students were used as an index for academic achievement. Descriptive statistics and inferential methods were use for data analysis Results: Statistical analysis indicated that there is significant relationship between neuroticism and internet addiction. The results also revealed that there is not any difference between internet addiction in male and female students. Conclusion: According to the results, it seems that, some personality traits of students including neuroticism are important to internet addiction, but gender is not an important factor in it.
